A regional recording may not be an Italian recording
Neapolitan, Sicilian and Venetian are separate Romance systems with their own vocabulary and morphology, not pronunciations of Standard Italian. When a speaker moves into one of them mid-conversation, and in real recordings they do, the transcriber faces a question no accuracy target answers on its own: write the regional form as spoken, or write the Italian the speaker would otherwise have used.
Spirelight settles that in the scope. If the regional form is kept, we agree which spelling tradition to follow, because these varieties have literary orthographies rather than one official standard. If it is rendered into Italian, the transcript says so, and nobody downstream mistakes a rendering for verbatim speech.
Regional Italian is the ordinary case, not the edge case
Most speakers sit on a continuum: standard grammar with regional lexis, regional syntax with standard words, and a great deal of movement between them inside a single turn. Elision and article contraction erase word boundaries the transcript has to restore, and consonant doubling across word boundaries is heard far more often than it is written, showing up in the spelling only of fixed forms such as soprattutto and davvero.
Annotators are assigned by region rather than by the language label on the project, and the sampled review pass runs with someone from the same area. The accuracy target is measured on a held-out slice of your own audio, so the number reflects the register mix you actually recorded rather than clean read speech.
This service is not the right fit when
- Sardinian or Friulian audio. Those are separate languages with separate staffing, not an Italian line item.
- Machine-only transcription with no human pass.
- Italian to English subtitling or translation. Transcription is same-language.
