Where the coverage comes from, stated plainly
Spirelight does not run an office in Russia and does not claim one. Russian coverage is sourced across Russian-speaking markets and the diaspora, including Ukraine, Kazakhstan and the Baltic states, where Russian is a working language for very large numbers of speakers.
That is worth knowing before a project starts, because it shapes both the audio and the annotators who touch it. If your requirement is specifically speakers resident in Russia, say so at scoping and you will get a direct answer about what can and cannot be staffed rather than a quiet substitution.
Unstressed vowels do not tell you how to spell the word
Russian reduces unstressed vowels, so o and a fall together and e and i converge. Spelling is settled by morphology, by knowing the related form where the vowel carries stress, not by what reaches the ear. Case endings behave the same way: they carry the grammar, they are frequently reduced in fast speech, and the transcriber restores them by parsing the sentence.
The consequences are the ones that show up in a QA report rather than in a demo: whether yo is written or replaced with e, how soft signs are handled in reduced forms, and whether figures are written as digits or spelled out. Spirelight fixes each of those in the style guide and measures the target on a held-out slice of your own recordings.
Mixed speech needs a rule, not a preference
In Ukrainian and Belarusian settings, speakers move between Russian and the local language inside a single sentence, and the mixed varieties, Surzhyk and Trasianka, are ordinary speech rather than an error to be cleaned up. A transcript has to state which language a mixed utterance is written in and where the boundary is marked.
Spirelight agrees that convention before the first file and applies it across batches, so a delivery six months later can still be compared with the first one instead of quietly following a different rule.
This service is not the right fit when
- Ukrainian or Belarusian audio filed as Russian. They are separate languages and separate scopes.
- Machine-only transcription with no human pass.
- Translation between Russian and English. Transcription is same-language.
